The Biwa trout represents the oldest surviving lineage of the cherry salmon family, having become landlocked in Lake Biwa 500,000 years ago. In contrast, the modern cherry salmon emerged as a new species only 30,000 to 40,000 years ago. Both share the same ancestral DNA.
